Diet Adjustment: When giving care to someone who suffers from fecal incontinence some simple adjustments to the diet can help make things easier.

If stools are loose (diarrhea) you can adjust the diet to includes bananas, rice, applesauce (but not apple juice), toast, and cheese.

If stools are hard or your patient is constipated you can increase the amount of water given and/or increase the amount of dietary fiber taken by adding bran or a fiber drink like metamucil or unifiber.

A doctor may suggest an over-the-counter medication for diarrhea or incontinence. This should be done by someone who understands all of the medications your patient is currently taking.
